FES 5th Graders had the great opportunity of visiting the UW-Platteville campus last week. Students started their trip with a presentation from Mrs. Volz who discussed the presence of math in everyday life, whether it be in games like football, chess, checkers, or basketball. She talked about how math could be tied into a number of these games. She then had her speaker Tony talk about how he uses math as he juggles, discussing timing, averages, and patterns. Some of the students volunteered to attempt to juggle. Mr. McCallum and Mr. Z even gave it a try!
After a break for lunch, the fifth graders toured the campus. They started off by going to Doudna Hall, otherwise known as the education building. Mr. McCallum, a student teacher at FES, led the tour and gave his own personal spin, as he attends UW-Platteville and has spent a lot of time at Doudna. Next, they headed to Boebel Hall where students got to see the animal house. There was an Axolotl (Dewdrop), tortoise, cockroaches, snakes, and a bearded dragon.
Next, they toured the Pioneer Center where students typically go to eat lunch. It was the busiest time so students got to see what it was truly like in college. After that they took a quick walk through the Pioneer Activity Center(PAC) where college students can go to work out or do sports. Finally, they visited the newest addition to Platteville, the Sesquicentennial Hall for Engineering. They walked through the building to see the variety of machines and tools that are available for use such as, laser cutters, CNC machines, drill presses, 3D printers, and a whole lot more. It was a busy and fun day learning all about UW-Platteville. A huge thanks to Mrs. Volz for inviting the fifth graders to this busy and fun day of exploring at UW-Platteville!
