3 Chemistry students with their experiment

Last week in Chemistry, students were introduced to polarity in covalent molecules.  They added water to "magic sand" and regular sand to find that the "magic sand" repelled the water, while the regular sand absorbed it.  This phenomenon is due to the polar and nonpolar properties among the water and sands. They continued the investigation by testing how oil reacts to each sand, and to the water. That led them into discussing the nomenclature and properties of covalent compounds.

In Anatomy, the students are in the Histology unit and studying tissues. They learned how to identify epithelial tissues under the microscope on Monday, and learned how to identify connective, nervous, and muscular tissues later in the week.

In STEM class, students had to design an experiment. They practiced identifying variables, writing a procedure, and analyzing data. Here are pictures of some of their experiments as they ran them.

Mrs. Carlson has been offering dissections in RTI as an exploratory activity. On Monday, 10/4, these students dissected a fetal pig and were identifying major organs. Several other students came in last week and dissected a variety of organisms, including frogs, crayfish, worms, and cow eyes.
