a group of students are holding their inventions made out of recycled products

Written by Addie Sheckler and Evelyn Larson

During reading in Mrs. Greenlee’s 4th grade class we learned about Benjamin Franklin’s inventions. In science we invented!  First, we had to choose our favorite toy or game we wanted to make an improvement to or invent. Then, everyone had to do a lot of research to find when it was invented and who made it. After making a sketch of our improvement or new product we identified what materials we needed to build our invention.
One other rule was that we had to make our invention of recycled items. Everyone made their project better in some way. Some people had to modify or change their ideas because something didn’t work. We had softballs and footballs designed to go further or faster. Games that had noisy parts were made quiet. A bike was designed for the rider to pedal in the rain and stay dry. A pull back car was designed to go further and faster. Soccer balls were invented to play day or night and a card shuffler shuffled cards quickly. Candy dispensers held many different kinds of candy. Basic book marks were made to be really inexpensive. Bird houses and bird feeders were designed to be balanced and nest and feed only the birds. We hope to hear back if they worked. Finally, everyone had to present their project to the class. Some projects were a success some were not. We all loved doing these projects.
