Wreath Layers

Good Morning Fennimore School District!

Today we celebrate four 7th graders (JP Scanlan, Grant Biba, Ellen Meyer, Allison Gleason) who were selected to lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.  Watch our facebook feed and we'll attempt to stream the event live later this morning! In the meantime, check out the essays written by the students!

Wreath Laying Essay - Grant Biba

I would like to represent Fennimore Middle School by laying the wreath at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier because I’d like to honor all those who have served in the military and those who have given their lives for our freedom. My Great-Grandpa Joe Yager served in World War II on an ammunition ship in the Pacific Ocean. My Great-Great-Grandpa Howard Hadley, Sr. was a military policeman in World War I.  Laying this wreath would honor their service.

The leadership skills I have learned while serving on student council have helped prepare me to represent Fennimore Middle School at such an important event.  It is important to me that America does not forget about the soldiers that lost their lives for our freedom.  The soldiers who didn’t come home or were never identified deserve the same amount of respect and dignity that all soldiers receive which is why laying the wreath would mean so much to me.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Essay - Allison Gleason

I think that getting chosen to lay the wreath at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier would be an honor. I am a responsible person so I think I would be a very good representative for Fennimore Middle School. I would love to show my appreciation to the veterans that fought for our country. My grandpa served in the Vietnam War and he was in the Air Force. My grandpa from my mom's side of the family fought in the Korean War in the army and my great grandpa fought in World War ll, and he got a purple heart. My grandpa from my mom's side of the family was also a guard at Camp David, which is a U.S retreat for the president. Even though they are not alive today, I would like to show them that I am grateful for their service. Thank you very much for considering me for this opportunity!

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Essay - JP Scanlan

I would like to represent 7th grade, Fennimore and the Middle School as somebody chosen for the honor of laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I believe that I fit criteria as I have maintained good grades throughout the school year. I think that I have done a lot for my friends when or if they ask me for help. I have participated in FFA doing soil judging. At Saint Mary’s church I help the priest in mass. I am also in 7th and 8th grade football. Another reason I want to be selected for this honor is because my brother, Julian Graser, is in the Army Reserves. My Grandpa Peter was drafted in the Vietnam War as well as a great uncle on my mom’s side, who was part of the Ghost Army unit in World War 2. I believe that academically I qualify for this part. I would also like to believe that my family members who have served would agree.

Wreath Laying Essay - Ellen Meyer

I’m very excited for our trip to Washington DC and feel honored that we get the opportunity to hang a Fennimore Middle School wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier!

I look forward to this trip for many reasons.  My Grandpa Mike, on my dad's side, fought in the Vietnam War. I think he would be very proud of me if I were to represent Fennimore. Also, my Great-Grandpa, Byron Miller, fought in WWII and earned a Purple Heart. I never got a chance to  meet him because he died before I was born, but I would really like to honor him and pay tribute to his sacrifices and recognize all veterans.

I would be a good representative to lay the wreath on behalf of Fennimore Middle School because I am mature, responsible, and trustworthy. My classmates voted me onto the student council for the third year in a row so I feel they also believe I have those qualities. I think this is a very exciting experience for my classmates and I, and a great opportunity to grow.
