FES students finished up a busy Homecoming Week last Friday with some fun activities! First, our Kindergarten friends got a visit from Screech, the football team, head coach Mr. Rosemeyer, and the cheerleaders! Then, later on they boarded a bus and got the chance to ride through the Homecoming Parade. This week's Class of the Week is Mr. Rutkowski's 3rd Grade Class. These hard-working students have been learning all about classifying animals based on their unique characteristics. They have been using important reading comprehension skills, such as comparing and contrasting and finding the main idea in a text to understand what is being read. They have also been learning number sense strategies that help them solve unknown multiplication facts in their story problems. Finally, in science, they are identifying characteristics of fossils to determine what a dinosaur might have looked like. Mr. Rutkowski is thrilled with the hard work and excellent questions, even though we can end up following a rabbit trail from time to time. Keep it up 3rd graders! #Eaglessoar

Last week, the first grade classes went to The Heritage Center in Dubuque to see A Pirate-y Peter Pan. They got to be pirates as they flew to Neverland to explore the classic fairy tale. After the play, they stopped at a nearby park for lunch and some fun! #fes #EaglesSoar

This week's Class of the Week is Mrs. Wienkes' 4th Grade Class. This class has exceeded expectations coming into 4th grade! In science they have been busy learning about the different states of matter and how objects can go from one state to another. They have already written a personal narrative and are busy finding context clues to help them answer questions in reading . They are also learning quickly how important knowing multiplication facts are as they are starting to learn how to multiply two digits by one digit numbers. Recently, Mrs. Williams-Richter shared some butterflies she raised to release with Mrs. Reinke's 2nd Grade Class. The students watched the Monarchs soar high, with some leaving the courtyard immediately, while others circled and landed to find nectar before taking off for Mexico. These Monarchs that fly 3,000 miles to Mexico are slightly larger than a normal Monarch and are known as the "super generation." Back in the classroom, the students learned more about Monarchs and were introduced to two other butterflies that Mrs. WR is raising to release --the Silver-spotted Skipper and the Silver-bordered Fritillary. The students loved seeing the caterpillars crawling around. Thank you Mrs. WR for sharing your love and knowledge of nature with our students! #fes #EaglesSoar

Students in AP Environmental Science are studying biodiversity. They recently went outside to analyze the biodiversity of different areas of Marsden Park. Students used quadrats to randomly select an area, and had to determine the variety of species within their quadrat. Students calculated the biodiversity of their plot with Simpson's Diversity Index, and then compared their area to the areas studied by other students.
