Before spring break, fourth grade students participated in a presentation on the Civil War. The Thyrens have been Civil War reenactors for 25 years and have provided presentations to schools for 13 years. This year Barbara and Kristina shared what life was like during the time of the Civil War (1861-1865). The students learned a lot about the Civil War during the presentation. They learned that children only went to school for six years. Each family had one slate to share during the day. Children also made their own toys to play with. Women dressed in layers that included hoop skirts. They also had dresses for different things they did such as cooking or going to town. The women had many responsibilities in daily living including sewing all the clothes. Soldiers did various trainings at Camp Randall in Madison to be ready to serve in the war. The process of loading the rifle included using their teeth to open the gunpowder before pouring it into the barrel, then they packed it tight and put the bullet in. Soldiers put a bayonet on the end of their rifles and ran at the enemy to scare them off. The food they ate included hardtack, pork and anything else they could find. Thank You, Thyrens for sharing your knowledge with our students! #fes #EaglesSoar

This week's Class of the Week is Mrs. Streeter's First Grade Class. These first graders have been working so hard. They have been learning lots of new sounds, vocabulary words, tricky words, and different ways to help them be successful in their reading and writing. In math, they have been learning to identify the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, and the value of each coin. In CKLA Knowledge, they have been learning about some Ancient Civilizations and how different life was many, many years ago. Mrs. Streeter's students are so excited that spring has arrived and that means warmer weather and enjoying more fun times and continued learning with their classmates! It has been a wonderful year! Keep up the great work 1st graders!

Mrs. Williams-Richter recently visited Mrs. Reinke's classroom to read the book entitled The Button Box by Margarette Reid. Mrs. WR also shared her button collection. Students were surprised to learn that buttons once were made from wood, deer horns and shells. Some of the shell buttons were made from clam shells collected locally from the Mississippi River. The highlight of the day for many students was learning how to make a button hum on a string. The students thought this book definitely deserved to bow before they gave it a nice round of applause! #fes #EaglesSoar

Last week, the fourth graders embarked on an exciting field trip to Madison, where they had the opportunity to visit the Veterans' Museum and the State Capitol. At the Veterans' Museum, students learned about Wisconsin's significant involvement in various wars, including the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. This immersive experience deepened their understanding of the sacrifices made by our veterans. Following their time at the museum, the students explored the State Capitol, where they visited the Supreme Court room, the Assembly's room, the Senate's room, and the Governor's Conference room. This field trip is a great way to enrich student's knowledge of Wisconsin's history and inspire a greater appreciation for civic engagement and the democratic process. #fes #EaglesSoar For more pictures visit https://fcs.smugmug.com/2024-25-School-Year/Fennimore-Elementary-School-2024-25/4th-Grade-2024-25/Capital-Field-Trip
